Senior Structural Engineer
Your next promotion probably won’t come simply from becoming better technically.
It will come from taking on the responsibilities your current position may not yet give you access to.
By the time you have built five to seven years of structural engineering experience, you are likely to be technically capable and confident in delivering projects. However, when your responsibilities stop evolving, it can become easy to plateau. Projects begin to feel familiar, the learning curve flattens, and progression—both professionally and financially—can start to slow.
Structural Search has been retained exclusively by one of the Directors of one of London’s most respected structural engineering consultancies to appoint a Senior Structural Engineer into a genuinely strategic position within its team.
The Consultancy
This is a highly regarded structural engineering practice, renowned for the quality of its engineering, its industry-leading approach to sustainability and, perhaps most importantly, the way it develops its people.
It is a consultancy where ambitious engineers are given the support, exposure and responsibility required to build long-term careers.
The business delivers technically challenging, architecturally interesting projects and has developed an excellent reputation across the structural engineering industry.
The Opportunity
The position sits between one of the consultancy’s Directors, two highly experienced Associates and the wider engineering team.
It offers the successful candidate genuine leadership responsibility while allowing them to remain heavily involved in the technical design and delivery of projects.
This is much more than a conventional Senior Structural Engineer position.
You will act as an important bridge between the consultancy’s leadership and project delivery teams, with responsibility for:
- Leading the structural design and delivery of projects
- Managing and coordinating project teams
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced engineers
- Reviewing work and contributing to technical decisions
- Working closely with Directors and Associates
- Developing relationships with architects, clients and wider project teams
- Helping to maintain the consultancy’s high standards of engineering and design
The role provides the type of broader responsibility that can naturally accelerate progression towards Associate level and beyond.
Projects
The consultancy’s project portfolio is exceptionally varied and includes:
- Reinforced concrete frame buildings
- Major refurbishment and adaptive-reuse projects
- Museums and cultural buildings
- Schools and educational facilities
- High-end private residential projects
- Bespoke structures and architectural installations
- Art installations and specialist engineering projects
It is an environment particularly suited to engineers who enjoy solving different structural problems rather than repeatedly working on the same building type.
About You
The ideal candidate is likely to have around six to seven years of structural engineering experience within a UK consultancy.
Applications are also welcomed from exceptional engineers with approximately five years of experience who feel ready to step into a position with greater responsibility.
You will ideally have:
- Strong structural design experience across a range of materials
- Experience delivering building structures from concept through to completion
- A sound understanding of reinforced concrete, steel, masonry and timber
- The confidence to lead projects and coordinate small teams
- Strong communication and client-facing skills
- An interest in mentoring and developing other engineers
- Chartered status, or be actively working towards Chartership with the IStructE or ICE
Most importantly, you should be ambitious, technically curious and ready to take on a role that offers greater influence over both projects and people.
Salary and Benefits
The package includes:
- Salary of £54,000–£60,000
- Annual bonus, typically between 5% and 8%
- Employer pension contribution of approximately 7.5%
- 23 days’ annual holiday
- Income protection
- Excellent wider benefits package
- Strong support for continued professional development and career progression
Location
The consultancy is based in Central London, with excellent transport links via the Northern, Central and Elizabeth lines.
