Sometimes, the best career move you can make is admitting that your first one wasn’t quite right.

I’ve just been instructed on two excellent opportunities for young Structural Engineers with 0–2 years’ experience, and I think they’re particularly interesting for those who might need to correct their career trajectory.

Something I’ve seen countless times over the years…

People join a company straight out of university, only to realise 6, 12 or 18 months down the line that they’re not in the right environment.

Perhaps the mentoring isn’t there. Perhaps the projects aren’t what they expected. Perhaps they’re simply not developing at the rate they should be.

And this is where people often make a mistake.

“I’ll stick it out for another year or two. It’ll look better on my CV.”

But will it?

If you already know you’re in the wrong environment, what exactly are you gaining by spending another two years there?

A longer stint on your CV? Maybe.

Two years of development you might never get back? Quite possibly.

At this stage of your career, the quality of your experience matters far more than the length of your employment.

The first few years are absolutely critical. They’re where you build your technical foundations, develop good habits, gain confidence and learn from the people around you.

Getting that environment right can make an enormous difference to where you find yourself five years down the line.

Which brings me to these two opportunities.

I’m working with a firm that has an exceptional track record of developing young engineers. We’re talking about an environment where people are regularly progressing towards Chartership in around four years, give or take.

That’s not by accident.

It’s the result of excellent mentoring, meaningful responsibility, interesting projects and a genuine commitment to developing people properly.

The opportunities:

📍 Central London
💰 £32,000–£38,000
📈 Double-digit percentage bonus
💷 13% pension contribution
🎓 Outstanding support towards Chartership

If you’re a fresh graduate, or perhaps 6, 12 or 18 months into your first role and quietly wondering whether you’ve made the right choice, I’d be very happy to have a conversation.

You don’t need to have made a bad career move to justify making a better one.

And you certainly don’t need to waste another two years proving it.
